It is the correct choice when the remediation action touches production systems in ways that could affect service availability — modifying security group rules on a load balancer, revoking permissions from a service account running a critical workload, or changing encryption settings on a database. Co-Pilot mode is also appropriate during the initial deployment of a new cloud security platform. The clearest candidates for Autopilot authorization are public access misconfigurations — S3 buckets with public read or write access enabled, storage resources without encryption, and security groups with unrestricted inbound access on sensitive ports. These findings have a single correct remediation, they represent immediate risk, and they recur frequently enough that routing them through a human approval queue creates unnecessary operational drag.

Access key rotation enforcement is another strong Autopilot candidate. IAM access keys older than 90 days should be deactivated on schedule — this is a well-defined policy with a clear trigger and a clear action. Autopilot mode is also appropriate for organizations with mature cloud security programs — teams that have been running Co-Pilot mode long enough to validate that the platform's remediation logic is reliable in their specific environment, and that have a clear taxonomy of which issue categories are safe for autonomous action versus which require escalation.

A Practical Framework for Deciding Between the Two

Rather than applying one mode universally, most security teams benefit from a layered approach. Define three categories of findings:

Autopilot-eligible: High-confidence findings with unambiguous remediation, low blast radius, and high recurrence. Examples include public bucket access, unencrypted storage volumes, inactive user accounts past defined thresholds, and access keys exceeding rotation policy.

Co-Pilot required: Findings where the correct remediation depends on context, where the affected resource is business-critical, or where the change touches production systems in ways that could affect availability.
